“Creativity is how I share my soul with the world.” – Brene Brown. This quote resonates deeply with me, especially as I expand FinishYourCrafts.com. The world of crafting, gardening, and DIY projects has always been my sanctuary, where I can express myself and create beauty from simple materials. However, turning this passion into a brand required more than creativity; it demanded a solid plan. That’s why I decided to write a brand plan.
Clarifying My Brand Ideas
The first step was to clarify my brand idea. I have always been passionate about creating unique and beautiful pieces using yarn, textiles, paint, recycled goods, and vintage items.
For example, I love knitting and crocheting cozy blankets using intricate patterns from vintage designs and upcycling old furniture into charming, one-of-a-kind decor pieces. These creations reflect my style and tell a story of transformation and creativity.
I wanted to share this passion with a broader audience through my website, YouTube channel, and social media platforms. Writing a brand plan helped me articulate my vision and the core values of my brand: inspiring creativity, using high-quality materials, and fostering a community of like-minded crafters.
Mapping Out My Strategy
Once I had a clear vision, I needed a strategy to achieve my goals. This included outlining my target audience, defining my unique selling points, and setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals.
For instance, one of my content plans for a YouTube series is “Featured Projects,” where I showcase completed crafts and provide an overview of the materials and techniques used. Additionally, I create Inspiration Boards that gather the color palette, tools, and materials needed for various projects, offering a visual guide and creative spark for my audience.
This strategic planning aligns with my brand values of inspiring creativity, using high-quality materials, and fostering a community of like-minded crafters. It ensures my content is engaging and educational, helping my audience embark on creative journeys.
Seeking Funding and Investment
A well-written brand plan is also crucial when seeking funding or investment. Although I am primarily self-funded, I recognized the potential need for additional resources to expand my brand.
My brand plan included simple financial projections, future income and expense estimates, and potential revenue streams like ad revenue from YouTube, sponsored content, and product sales. By clearly outlining these elements, I can show potential investors how my brand can grow and become profitable. I plan to remain self-funded but am open to exploring funding opportunities in the future if they align with my goals.
Identifying Potential Challenges
Every business faces challenges, and crafting is no exception. By writing a brand plan, I identified potential obstacles and developed strategies to overcome them.
For example, one challenge I faced was fluctuating material costs, which affected my pricing. To overcome this, I started buying materials in bulk during sales when I had a large project planned. Calculating the materials needed for a project is essential to prevent overspending. Additionally, I compared different companies to determine the best value and quality of materials. This approach helped me manage costs and maintain consistent pricing for my products.
Creating a Roadmap for the Future
Finally, having a brand plan provided me with a roadmap for the future. It’s easy to get lost in the day-to-day tasks and lose sight of the bigger picture. My brand plan constantly reminds me of where I want my brand to go and the steps I need to take to get there.
My key goals and milestones include:
- Developing an online pop-up store.
- Batching YouTube videos for 2-3 weekly uploads.
- Launching a quarterly newsletter on Substack.
- Creating podcasts and YouTube Shorts alongside website and video posts.
These upcoming projects keep me motivated and ensure I am always moving forward.
