Honoring a Loved One: Crafting Heartfelt Boro and Sashiko Memorial Pillows

A Project Born from Love and Remembrance

When my friend Beverly reached out with a special request, I immediately felt the deep, personal connection this project would hold. Beverly wanted to honor the memory of her beloved sister, Cossondra, who had passed away suddenly in 2019. Her vision was to transform Cossondra’s cherished Camp Fire vest and some of her favorite childhood vests and work shirts into pillows—gifts for herself and her sisters. This project wasn’t just about fabric and stitching together memories, love, and legacy.
When Beverly mentioned the butterfly connection, I immediately knew that the butterfly fabric I had saved for years—vibrant with deep hues of pink, blue, and purple—would be perfect for this tribute. Pink and butterflies were Cossondra’s favorite things, making this fabric an ideal way to honor her memory.

Cossondra’s cherished Camp Fire vest, adorned with patches from her time in the co-ed youth development organization. Camp Fire, originally known as Camp Fire Girls of America, was the first nonsectarian, multicultural organization for girls in America. It is now known for its gender-inclusive programs and emphasis on outdoor activities.

The Power of Boro and Sashiko: Stitching with Intention

As I planned the pillows, I wanted them beautifully crafted and deeply meaningful. For inspiration, I turned to the traditional Japanese techniques of Boro and Sashiko.

Boro is a mending technique that celebrates the beauty in patched, worn fabrics—transforming them into something new while preserving their history.

Sashiko, with its intricate stitching patterns, complements Boro by bringing fabrics together in a mindful, artistic way.

While I didn’t strictly adhere to these methods, I incorporated a Sashiko-inspired stitching technique to create delicate, intentional patterns on the butterfly fabric, incorporating Cossondra’s favorite color. Each stitch became a way of keeping her spirit alive, reflecting her lasting impact on her family.

Crafting a Personal Touch: Hand-Embroidered “Sista” Appliqué

To add a deeply personal element to the pillows, I hand-embroidered a flower appliqué with the word “Sista”—a term that Cossondra and her sisters lovingly used for one another. I started by designing a flower in PicMonkey, an online photo editor. Then, I focused on finding the perfect font to replicate the style used on the pink T-shirts they all wore. For this, I turned to Microsoft Publisher, which offers a variety of fonts. When I couldn’t find an exact match, I uploaded custom fonts directly into my computer’s font file to ensure I had the right look.

Once I finalized the font and design, I transferred it onto a pink fabric square using typewriter carbon paper. I backed the fabric with freezer paper to stabilize the delicate T-shirt material and ensure a smooth stitching process. The appliqué and butterfly accents were then carefully hand-stitched onto black fabric from Cossondra’s work shirts. This combination of thoughtful design tools and handcrafting techniques added a deeply personal and heartfelt touch, making these pillows a genuine tribute to Cossondra’s memory and her sisters’ bond.

A Tribute Woven with Memories

Throughout the process, I was reminded of Cossondra’s unwavering love for her family. She was always present—never missing a game, a family event, or an opportunity to support her loved ones. The word “Sista” captured the bond shared by her and her sisters, and I sought to embed this connection within each pillow. The butterfly fabric became a fitting symbol of her vibrant and transformative spirit. The slow, thoughtful stitching and the art of Boro and Sashiko turned the pillows into keepsakes that hold Cossondra’s memory and love in every stitch.

Creating Lasting Memories Through Craft

This project was more than a crafting endeavor; it was an opportunity to channel love, remembrance, and connection into something beautiful and lasting. The finished pillows, adorned with butterflies and stitched with intention, are a heartfelt tribute to Cossondra’s enduring legacy. Even though our loved ones may no longer be with us, their presence lives on in the memories we cherish and the love we continue to hold in our hearts.
Much like the butterflies on the fabric, Cossondra’s spirit continues to soar in the hearts of those who loved her. The art of Boro and Sashiko allowed me to honor her memory while bringing comfort to her family, reminding me of the profound impact our loved ones have on our lives.

A Life Remembered

As I completed this heartfelt project, I was reminded of Cossondra’s vibrant life and profound impact on those who loved her. This blog post is dedicated to her memory, celebrating the love, joy, and transformation she brought into the world. The pillows are more than just creations—they are a lasting reminder of her enduring spirit.
